The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, has described the sharing formula for elective positions in the newly constituted Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State by the Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, as fair and reasonable.
He said the formula was a reasonable offer that could be worked with if the objective of members was actually to move the party forward in the state.
In a statement made available to Saturday PUNCH on Friday by the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, the Presidential adviser, while speaking at a fence-mending parley in the state, appealed to agitated members of the old PDP in the state to allow peace to reign to enable the party to consolidate on its leadership position.
The National Working Committee of the party had on October 26, 2014, dissolved the executive committee of the party at all levels in the state.
While explaining how the sharing formula was arrived at, Kuku explained that a five-man committee was formed from among the old PDP members with the mandate to reduce tension in the party following the dissolution of the state executive.
He said, “We came up with a procedure and harmonised positions as follows: Senate (new PDP – two, old – one), House of Reps (new PDP – six, old – three) and House of Assembly (new PDP – 17, old PDP – nine).
“It is not a bad bargain at all. It is better for Mr. President, it is better for PDP and it is better for all of us. For instance, before the governor defected, PDP had only one member in the House of Assembly and House of Representatives with no Senator at all.”
Kuku called for peace in the party so that all hands could be on deck to handle the major task of the 2015 elections.
“The leadership of the old PDP had, earlier in the week, commended the governor for his openness, magnanimity and sacrifice in the on-going integration process of the old Labour Party and the PDP in the state,” the statement added.
